Chevrolet Trucks Get New V8 Engines and Digital Oil Level Display
GM is preparing new 5.7- and 6.6-liter V8s for Chevrolet pickups. They are intended to offer more power and better towing figures – and do without the classic oil dipstick.

General Motors is extensively reworking its large gasoline engines for Chevrolet trucks. At the center are two new V8 units with 5.7 and 6.6 liters of displacement, which are set to play an important role in the brand's pickup model lines in the future. The central promises: more power than the previous engines, better conditions for towing, and a modernized operating logic in the vehicle.
What stands out is not only the return of a very well-known displacement size. Something fundamental is also changing in everyday servicing: the classic oil dipstick is disappearing. Instead of manually checking the oil level in the engine bay, drivers will be able to call it up via a digital display in the truck's operating system.
Two new V8s for Chevrolet's truck lineup

The new engines are described as 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V8s. With this, GM is clearly positioning the units in the area that remains particularly important for large pickups in North America: robust gasoline engines with high sustained output, designed for payload, towing, and long operating periods.

What is certain, however, is that both new V8s are intended to surpass the engines they replace in terms of power. In addition, an improvement in towing capacity or towing capabilities is a focus. Why GM continues to invest in large V8s

When towing heavy loads in particular, it is not only peak output that matters, but also how consistently an engine works under load, how well the transmission and cooling are tuned, and how predictable the response remains.
A new V8 can pursue several goals at the same time here: more power for better acceleration and overtaking reserves, optimized maps for towing, possibly lower emissions compared with older units, and better integration into modern vehicle architectures. Even if the basic formula – a large naturally aspirated or V8 gasoline engine – sounds familiar, the actual development often lies in details such as thermal management, friction reduction, control electronics, and diagnostic functions.
Digital oil level instead of dipstick
The most visible change for owners, however, concerns not power but maintenance. GM is replacing the traditional oil dipstick with a digital oil level display in the vehicle's user interface. In doing so, the truck segment is following a trend that has long since arrived in many modern passenger cars: operating states are no longer checked mechanically, but recorded via sensors and shown on the display.
For many drivers, this may be more convenient. The oil level can be checked without opening the hood, warning messages can be integrated into the onboard electronics, and ideally the display can explain more clearly whether the oil level is correct, too low, or too high. For fleet operators, digital recording can also offer advantages if maintenance data is read out or documented centrally.
At the same time, doing without the dipstick is unlikely to generate enthusiasm everywhere. Truck buyers are often practice-oriented, and many owners value simple mechanical checking options. An oil dipstick is cheap, independent of software displays, and also works when one distrusts sensor values. In a work vehicle, this redundancy can seem important – especially for users who keep their trucks for a long time or use them in remote regions.
The decisive factor will therefore be how reliably and comprehensibly the digital system works. A good solution must not only display a value, but also establish clear conditions for the measurement: engine warm or cold, vehicle parked on level ground, waiting time after switching off, possible error messages in the event of an invalid measurement. If GM solves these points cleanly, the digital oil check can make everyday life easier. If not, the missing dipstick will become an avoidable annoyance for some customers.
Significance for buyers and owners
For new-car buyers, the engine revision is relevant above all for three reasons. First, stronger V8s promise better reserves, especially with a trailer or high payload. Second, new units can have a long-term influence on consumption, maintenance intervals, and durability – points that can only be assessed with complete data and real-world experience. Third, the digital oil level display changes the relationship between driver and vehicle: less manual checking, more trust in sensors and software.
Owners of older Chevrolet trucks will also read the new engines as an indication of where GM is heading with its combustion-engine pickups. The group is signaling that large gasoline engines in the truck segment will not disappear in the short term. At the same time, however, dependence on electronics is growing even with classic drivetrains. The V8 remains, then, but it is becoming more strongly part of a digitally monitored overall system.

Large trucks are economically central for GM. New engines can help secure competitiveness against other full-size pickups without immediately pushing customers toward a completely different drive concept.
At the same time, expectations of a modern combustion engine are shifting. It is no longer enough simply to offer displacement and power. Buyers expect better integration, more precise displays, connected maintenance, and a user interface that fits the rest of the vehicle. The digital oil level is a small detail, but it stands for this development.

The missing key data remain important. Without final horsepower and torque values, consumption figures, towing capacities, model allocation, and market launch, the competitiveness of the new V8s cannot yet be fully assessed. The question of how the 5.7- and 6.6-liter versions differ in price and technology also remains central for buyers.
Nevertheless, one thing is clear: Chevrolet is preparing its large trucks for a new V8 generation. For enthusiasts, this is a sign that the classic eight-cylinder engine continues to live on in the pickup. For buyers, however, what ultimately matters is less nostalgia than the overall package of pulling power, reliability, usability, and costs. That is exactly what the new GM engines will have to be measured against.
