BMW iX4: Electric X4 successor launches with up to around 604 hp
BMW is taking the X4 concept into the Neue Klasse era: The iX4 combines coupe-like SUV proportions with electric drive, all-wheel-drive versions and high range figures.

BMW turns the X4 concept into an electric car
BMW has presented the iX4, transferring the idea of the X4 into the electric Neue Klasse family. The model arrives as a so-called Sports Activity Coupé: technically and conceptually an SUV, but visually with a flatter roofline and a more coupe-like rear than a classic high-roof electric model. For BMW, the iX4 is therefore more than just another electric variant. It shows how the brand is carrying its familiar body-style niches into the next platform generation.
The iX4 follows on from the previous X4 concept, though not merely as an electric version of an existing combustion-engine model. It belongs to the Neue Klasse generation, which at BMW stands for a new electric architecture, new software and control concepts, and more efficient drive technology. This puts the model in a particularly important area of the market: midsize premium SUVs with a sporty look, high everyday usability and increasingly electric drive.
Power: up to around 604 hp in the M60

At the top of the model range is an M60 version with up to about 604 hp. In terms of power, this places the iX4 well above what many buyers previously associated with an X4 M or its performance derivatives. The exact tuning will be crucial: In an electric SUV, it is not only peak output that matters, but also how consistently the power remains available, how finely the recuperation works and whether the suspension, brakes and weight fit together.
For customers who do not need the top model, the iX4 50 xDrive is relevant as an important all-wheel-drive variant. This version alone is intended to offer high range figures and is likely to be the more rational entry point for many buyers if price, equipment and charging performance are right. The xDrive designation signals all-wheel drive, which plays an important role in this vehicle class for traction, towing-load expectations and winter suitability.
Range: high figures, but still requiring context

For the range figures, values from around 428 miles up to 514 miles are currently being mentioned. Converted, that corresponds roughly to 689 to 827 kilometers. However, this span should not be hastily understood as a contradiction, because ranges depend heavily on version, wheel size, equipment, battery size and test cycle. Regional figures can also vary: A WLTP value is generally not directly comparable with a stricter US-oriented consumption figure.
For buyers, it is therefore especially important which homologated values BMW states for the individual markets and equipment levels. Large wheels, performance packages or particularly wide tires can noticeably affect range. Charging performance is equally relevant, for which precise market figures will still be decisive in connection with everyday usability. A large range figure is helpful, but only in combination with a short charging time, stable charging performance and efficient consumption does a convincing long-distance car emerge.
Why this is important for buyers
The iX4 enters a market in which many customers are not only looking for an electric car, but an electric car with a familiar premium feel. The X4 format was never the most practical SUV form, but it appealed to buyers who wanted a raised seating position, distinctive design and sportier proportions. It is precisely this target group that is now moving toward electric drive without necessarily switching to a plainly styled family SUV.
For private customers, the iX4 means more choice in the segment of electric premium SUV coupes. For company-car drivers, range, performance and brand image could be an important combination, provided leasing rates and residual-value forecasts prove attractive. For existing X4 owners, the model is an indication that BMW is not abandoning the X4’s design language and positioning, but is transferring them into a new drive generation.
Competition and segment pressure
The iX4 will not be operating in an empty field. Electric premium SUVs and SUV coupes have now become a core segment in which German manufacturers, new electric brands and established luxury brands compete for customers. BMW has to deliver several things at the same time here: high efficiency, convincing software, fast charging, precise driving dynamics and an interior quality that justifies the price.
The coupe-like SUV format in particular is attractive for manufacturers because it often enables higher margins. For buyers, by contrast, it is a trade-off. The flatter roofline can restrict the luggage compartment and rear headroom, but it brings a more emotional appearance. Anyone seeking maximum practicality will probably be more likely to choose a more conventionally cut electric SUV. Anyone who places greater emphasis on design and presence is likely to find the iX4 more interesting.
Neue Klasse as a test for BMW
The iX4 is also interesting from an industrial strategy perspective because it brings the Neue Klasse strategy into a high-volume premium segment. BMW long relied on flexible platforms that allow combustion engines, plug-in hybrids and electric cars in parallel. With the Neue Klasse, the focus is shifting more strongly toward pure electric architectures. That can bring advantages in packaging, efficiency, battery space, software integration and cost structure.
Whether these advantages will be noticeable in the iX4 depends on the final technical data. The decisive factors are not only horsepower and range, but also battery chemistry, charging window, thermal management, efficiency at motorway speeds and over-the-air capabilities. It will also become clear how BMW implements the operating concept and whether classic brand values such as steering feel, seating position and suspension tuning are retained in the electric age.
Points still open
Prices, exact market launches, full equipment details and final range figures for each market are still central to the purchase decision. Information on battery capacity, charging performance, towing capacity and luggage compartment volume will also determine the practical utility. In the top M60 model, it will also be interesting to see whether BMW places the focus more on sprint figures or on repeatable performance.
One thing is certain: With the iX4, BMW’s electric lineup is getting a model that is deliberately intended to appeal to more than just rational buyers. It brings the X4 formula into the electric era and should be exciting for customers looking for a sportily styled premium SUV with long range. For BMW, the iX4 is an important building block in showing that the Neue Klasse is not only intended to be more efficient and more modern, but can also recast familiar brand roles.
