Hyundai Santa Fe EREV: seven-seat SUV set to launch with range extender in 2027

Hyundai is preparing a new EREV drivetrain for the Santa Fe: electrically driven wheels, a combustion engine as a power generator and up to 600 miles of total range.

Hyundai is not relying solely on pure battery cars for the next step in electrification. From 2027, the Santa Fe is set to come to market as an EREV – an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle. The concept combines electric drive motors with a combustion engine that does not primarily drive the wheels, but generates electricity for the battery and electric drive. For buyers of large family SUVs, this could become an important interim solution: as much of an electric feel as possible in everyday use, but with significantly less range anxiety on long journeys.

The Santa Fe EREV is set to become the first Hyundai with this type of drivetrain. A launch in the first half of 2027 is planned for the USA. Whether and when the model will be offered in Europe or specifically in Germany has not yet been confirmed. Prices, battery size, charging power, consumption figures and the purely electric range also remain open so far.

An Extended-Range EV differs from a classic hybrid and also from many plug-in hybrids. In a normal hybrid, the combustion engine can drive the wheels directly depending on the driving situation. In an EREV, by contrast, electric driving is at the center: the wheels are moved by electric motors, while the combustion engine supplies additional energy as a generator when the battery is not sufficient or the journey becomes particularly long.

The aim is a driving feel that is closer to an electric car: immediate response, quiet operation under low load and a drivetrain character without the typical gear changes of a combustion engine. At the same time, fuel can be refilled when no charging option is available. Hyundai is holding out the prospect of a total range of up to 600 miles for the Santa Fe EREV. Converted, that is around 965 kilometers. What is important here: this is not the same as purely electric range. It refers to the combined range from battery and generator operation.

Why Hyundai is choosing the Santa Fe of all models

The Santa Fe is a large, family-oriented SUV with up to seven seats. It is precisely in this segment that pure electric cars are particularly demanding technically and economically. Large vehicles need large batteries if they are to offer long ranges. That increases weight, costs and charging times. At the same time, customers expect an SUV of this size to be suitable for long distances, towing and holidays, as well as to offer a certain degree of everyday peace of mind.

An EREV can close a gap here. Those who regularly drive short distances and can charge at home or at work use the electric drive in everyday life. But those planning a long trip do not have to rely exclusively on fast-charging networks. For families who need a large car but are still skeptical about making the leap to a pure electric SUV, the Santa Fe EREV could therefore be more interesting than a conventional hybrid.

Hyundai is planning a layout with two electric motors for the Santa Fe EREV. That points to all-wheel drive, even if the final technical configuration is not yet fully known. In addition, a newly developed high-performance battery from in-house development is to be used. Specific data on capacity or chemistry has not yet been provided.

Genesis is also set to benefit

The technology will not be limited to Hyundai. Genesis, the group’s premium brand, is also set to receive extended-range models. That fits the brand’s positioning: in higher price classes, more complex drivetrains can be presented more easily, and customers there expect particularly high levels of refinement, performance and long-distance comfort.

For Genesis, an EREV drivetrain could make sense above all in larger sedans and SUVs. Premium customers who appreciate electric driving but do not want to be completely dependent on charging infrastructure are among the most likely target groups. At the same time, the group can spread the development costs across several brands and models.

Part of a larger model offensive

The Santa Fe EREV should not be understood as a standalone project. Hyundai and Genesis are planning more than 100 new or revised models by the end of the decade. These include pure electric cars, hybrids, further-developed combustion-engine models and now also range-extender vehicles.

This breadth shows how uncertain the industry’s transition phase remains. In some markets, demand for electric cars is growing strongly; in others, high prices, patchy charging infrastructure or political uncertainty are slowing the switch. Manufacturers therefore have to keep several technical paths open. An EREV is not a departure from the electric car, but an attempt to combine its advantages with the familiar range flexibility of a combustion engine.

For the industry, this is also a signal: after years in which many brands talked almost exclusively about pure BEV platforms, interim solutions are moving more strongly back into focus. Especially in North America and with large vehicles, range-extender concepts could gain in importance.

Advantages for buyers – and open questions

From a buyer’s perspective, the approach sounds attractive. A Santa Fe EREV could travel locally with low emissions, drive quietly and appear more efficient in stop-and-go traffic than a large gasoline model. On trips, the concern of being dependent on a functioning fast-charging station with an empty battery disappears. Especially for people without a reliable charging option at their destination, this is a practical advantage.

Nevertheless, important points remain unresolved. An EREV still has a combustion engine on board. That means fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, maintenance requirements and technical complexity. The vehicle has to carry a battery, electric motors, generator and tank. As a result, weight and costs can rise. Whether that pays off in everyday use compared with a good plug-in hybrid or a pure electric SUV depends heavily on price, efficiency, charging behavior and subsidy or tax rules.

The exact classification by authorities and markets will also be important. Depending on how the technology is homologated and what CO2 values result in the test cycle, the Santa Fe EREV can have very different effects for fleet targets and customer taxation. For European buyers, it is also crucial whether Hyundai offers the model at all and how it fits into future emissions regulations.

Why this matters

The Santa Fe EREV could become a strategically significant model for Hyundai. It combines a popular SUV format with a drivetrain idea that addresses many reservations about electric cars. If Hyundai keeps consumption in generator operation low, offers sufficient electric range and keeps the price within reason, the concept could become exciting for families, high-mileage drivers and supporters of technology solutions beyond classic hybrids.

For enthusiasts, the EREV is also an interesting indication of how diverse the electric future can be. Not every electrified car will be a pure battery car, and not every hybrid will function as before. The Santa Fe EREV is likely to show whether range extenders in the mass market are more than a transitional technology – or whether they will mainly remain a bridge for customers who do not yet want to drive fully electrically.
