Subaru to end combustion sales in Europe by 2027
Subaru will remove all combustion-engine model lines from its new-car range in Europe by the end of 2027 at the latest. From 2028, only electric cars will remain.
Subaru will end new-car sales of its combustion-engine models in Europe by around the end of 2027 at the latest. Subaru Germany has confirmed the move. This also marks the end, in the European market, of the boxer engines that have defined the brand’s traditional model lines. The manufacturer mainly cites stricter EU rules on CO₂ fleet limits as well as requirements for assistance and safety systems, which make homologation and sales more difficult, especially for smaller manufacturers.
Phase-out in several steps
The current Subaru Outback will be the first to go. The all-wheel-drive estate with a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine and 169 PS is already considered a run-out model and is due to disappear from the European range in the foreseeable future. Impreza, Crosstrek and Forester will follow during 2027. These three e-Boxer models use a mild-hybridized two-liter boxer engine with 136 PS.
It remains open whether Subaru will later bring full-hybrid models to Germany and Europe. In the United States, the Crosstrek and Forester are offered with a 2.5-liter full-hybrid boxer engine producing 197 PS. For Europe, however, there are currently no concrete announcements for such variants.
Only electric model lines from 2028
From 2028 at the latest, Subaru’s European range is set to consist only of three purely electric model lines. The models named are the Solterra crossover, the E-Outback off-road estate and the Uncharted SUV coupé. All three models are based on platforms from technically related Toyota vehicles: bZ4X, bZ4X Touring and C-HR+.
