With combustion-engine cars, mileage is a quick, albeit rough, indication of wear. With an electric car, this logic only applies in part. An EV with high mileage can have a well-preserved battery if it has mostly been charged moderately, protected thermally and not parked for long periods with a very high state of charge. Conversely, a relatively young vehicle may have aged more significantly if it was often left fully charged at high temperatures or was very frequently fast-charged.

It is important to note: A brand ranking is no substitute for inspecting the individual vehicle. What buyers should check now

The most important step before purchase is a traceable battery report. Some manufacturers, dealers and specialized inspection services can read out the condition of the high-voltage battery or estimate it using defined test procedures. Particularly meaningful are values for remaining capacity, usable energy, fault entries, temperature history and charging behavior. Not every onboard computer displays this information transparently.

Buyers should also read the battery warranty carefully. Many manufacturers cover high-voltage batteries for a specific combination of years and mileage, often with a minimum capacity threshold. But the details are decisive: Is the warranty still valid? Has it been restricted by missed service work? What capacity limit triggers a repair or replacement? And is the entire battery replaced or only one module repaired?

The test drive also remains important. The displayed range alone is not a reliable measurement because it depends on the driving profile. It makes more sense to look at consumption, temperature, state of charge and range development over a longer distance. Anyone who regularly drives long distances should also check whether the vehicle charges stably at fast chargers or whether charging power is reduced sharply early on.

Consequences for owners and residual values

For today’s EV owners, the study is an indication that the way the battery is treated can have a financial effect. Gentle use can support resale value. This includes not leaving the battery at 100 percent for long periods in everyday use, avoiding extreme heat where possible and using fast charging mainly when it is practically necessary. Modern electric cars actively protect their batteries, but physics and temperature remain decisive factors.

For brands with good results, such an analysis can be an advantage in the used-car trade. If buyers develop confidence in the long-term stability of the battery, acceptance and residual value rise. This is particularly important because lease returns and early EV generations are increasingly entering the used market. A transparent battery condition could take on a role for electric cars similar to that of the service booklet, roadworthiness inspection and engine running quality for combustion-engine cars.

For manufacturers with weaker results, pressure is building to offer more transparency and better diagnostic options. Tesla has long set standards in software, charging infrastructure and efficiency. However, a placement in the lower third for battery health shows that the market is becoming more differentiated. Buyers no longer compare only acceleration, infotainment or route planning for charging, but also aging behavior and repair risk.

The industry needs better battery transparency

The used-car market for electric cars is still at the beginning of a new evaluation logic. As long as battery inspections are not standardized, uncertainty remains. A standardized, manufacturer-independent battery condition report would help buyers, dealers, banks and insurers. It could stabilize residual values and reduce unfounded fears – both of supposedly unusable old batteries and of overly optimistic range promises.

The current ranking is therefore less a final judgment on individual brands than a signal: Battery quality in real-world operation is becoming a central competitive factor. Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and BMW benefit from strong results in this analysis. Tesla, at least in this dataset, has to contend with a weaker performance.

For car buyers, the practical consequence is clear. With a used electric car, what matters is not only whether the price seems attractive and the range is sufficient on paper. The actual condition of the high-voltage battery is decisive. Anyone who checks this point properly reduces the risk – and is more likely to find an EV that still reliably suits their own driving profile after years of use.
