Acura plans three new SUVs for North America

Acura wants to expand its SUV lineup in North America from 2028. Planned models include an outdoor model, an eight-seater above the MDX, and a new RDX with hybrid technology.

Acura is preparing three new SUV models for North America. The Honda premium brand aims to enter additional segments from 2028: planned models include one aimed at outdoor activities, a particularly large family SUV with eight seats, and the next generation of the RDX with hybrid drive.

Three SUV projects

  • The outdoor model is due to launch in the first half of 2028. Acura describes its positioning as a mix of robust use profile, modern design, upscale equipment and the brand’s typical comfort. There are no details yet on dimensions, prices or special off-road technology.
  • The brand’s largest SUV is to be positioned above the Acura MDX. While the MDX seats up to seven people, the new model is intended to offer eight seats. Acura has not yet named a specific market launch or technical data.
  • The fourth generation of the Acura RDX is also due in 2028. It will be the first Acura model to use Honda’s two-electric-motor hybrid technology, which is already used in other Honda models. System output and possible electric range are not yet known.

In parallel, Honda is developing a new V6 hybrid drive for D-segment vehicles. It is intended to combine sporty performance, higher towing capacity and lower fuel consumption. It has not been confirmed which specific models this drive is intended for; it also remains open whether it will be used in one of the two new larger SUV projects.

Growth despite a difficult luxury market

Acura points to a 4.4 percent increase in sales in the first nine months of 2026 compared with the same period of the previous year. The MDX grew particularly strongly, with sales up by more than 25 percent. According to the manufacturer, the entry-level ADX and Integra models are also performing well with retail customers in their segments. Acura is also announcing extensive updates for the ADX, MDX and Integra for the 2027 model year. A return of the brand to Europe has not been announced.
